Some interesting note about Red Abalone (various sources from the net)

- The scientific name for our red abalone in west cost is Haliotis rufescens
- The abalone shell was used as currency for many native Indian tribes
- World Record Red Abalone is measured 12.32″, it is collected by John Pepper in 1993
- Tagging studies indicate northern California red abalone take about 12 years to reach 7 inches but growth rates are highly variable. Abalone grow nearly one inch per year for the first few years and much slower after that. It takes about 5 years for red abalone to grow from 7 inches to 8 inches.
- Red abalone sometimes occur intertidally, but are more common subtidally. Most California abalones mature at between 3 and 7 years of age and may live for 35 to 54 years (Haaker et al., 1986).
